Quick actions (the hover bar)

Prefer the mouse? Shoji puts the most useful moves one rest of the pointer away.

A small grip sits in the space just above the active window. Rest the pointer on it for a moment and a bar of actions opens above that window. Move the pointer away and the bar closes by itself.

Clicks on the grip’s spot still reach the window under it; the bar only opens when you rest there.

  • Primary moves the window into the primary (biggest) spot. Same as ⌃⌥↩.
  • Focus fills the screen with the window; Exit focus puts it back. Same as ⌃⌥Z. See Focus mode.
  • Next screen moves the window into the other screen’s layout, when a second screen is connected and has room. With three or more screens, Move to lists them, each saying how much room it has.
  • Float takes the window out of the layout, centered; on a floating window, Tile puts it back. Same as ⌃⌥F. See Floating.

Each button shows its keyboard shortcut, so the bar also teaches them.

When the window’s tile holds a stack, the grip becomes one small segment per window, and the bar adds a row of the tile’s windows with their app icons. Click one to show it, use ‹ and ›, or drag a window’s chip onto another tile to move it there.

Settings → Mouse → Quick actions above windows. It’s on by default.
